Chapter 7

Mitch had no trouble spotting his dark-haired, blue-eyed, younger cousin outside the security gate at the airport. Nick was the one a half a dozen teenage girls and several older women were drooling over. Dressed in snug, faded jeans and a blue Henley, his handsome, baby face, combined with the muscular physique the Navy SEALs had given him, tended to be a draw for both sexes, no matter where he went. Unfortunately for the ladies, Nick was gay and madly in love with his fiancé.

A huge grin spread across Nick’s face when he spotted Mitch. A firm handshake was accompanied by some back slapping. “Hey, cuz! Decided to visit the Golden State before heading back home, huh? Good to see you.”

“Same here. Thanks for picking me up. I had to check my bags so we need to hit the baggage claim.” He looked up and checked the signs, but Nick was already headed in the right direction. “So, excited you’re going to be an uncle again?”

“Yup. Unlike when JD was born, I’ll be there when Angie pops this little rug rat out. I’m going to miss California, but I’m looking forward to joining Trident, working with my brothers, and being closer to the family. It’s time.”

Nick had about four more months before his last tour of duty was up, and he’d already let SEAL Team Three know this was his last one. Mitch couldn’t imagine how hard a decision that had been for him, as he often spoke of his teammates being his brothers as well. But with Jake by his side, it was time to move on and start a more stable life together. They’d both be taking assignments with Trident, but hopefully, those wouldn’t be as dangerous as the ones they’d faced in the past under Uncle Sam. Although, the company did have contracts with the government, so Mitch could only speculate.

“Has Jake picked someone to head the West Coast team when you’re ready to head east?”

Stepping on an escalator going down, Nick nodded. “Almost. He’s got it narrowed down to two people and is going to have a powwow with Ian and Dev about it next week. I think they’re going to wait to make the final decision until after they dump both teams in the Rockies for their final training runs. The Omega team will be doing that in a couple of weeks. Then they’ll schedule TS West for the same drill.”

Mitch had heard all about that. Ian and Dev wanted to make sure the teams could work together as cohesive units. They’d be airlifted by helicopter to a remote section of the Rocky Mountains where they’d be set down with minimal gear. It would be at least a two-day hike out of the wilderness. A satellite radio was only to be used in extreme emergencies, and from what Mitch understood, a broken bone didn’t qualify—only life-threatening injuries did. As usual, he was glad he’d gone the college route and gotten his MBA.

While they waited
